food lion couponing guide....

food lion is a southern grocery shopping chain that is notorious for giving couponers a hard time. but don't let this discourage you!! you can still find many a good deal at FL, and you may get to educate a high school cashier about coupons at the same time.

as soon as you walk in the door, you will want to sign up for the food lion loyalty card, the mvp card. this gives you all the good deals in the store. you aren't actually earning anything back with the card, but you are saving money on the items with costs lowered specifically for mvp card holders. it's easy, it's free, and they even give you a handy keytag. no excuses, sign up!

food lion accepts all manufacturer's coupons that are not expired. they do accept internet printables (IPs), but often have to call a manager over, who in turn has to turn back around and go to the customer service desk, check a large binder of accepted coupons and then come back and accept it. time consuming? yes. money saved? yes. deal breaker? no.

food lion also has their own printable coupons, called Food Lion Internet Printables (FLIP). these can be stacked with the manufacturer's coupons. pair both of these with a sale and you have a good deal on your hands! stock up!! you can sign up for the shopper's companion to have FLIP coupons sent to your inbox.

food lion also has mobile coupons (of sorts)... these come out RARELY, but i have snagged a free hershey's bar from them, so all is not lost! when a mobile coupon comes out, you will be prompted to send a text message to their number (usually a six digit number) with a password. for example, i texted "hershey" to 467467 and followed the prompts that were texted back to me (entering in my mvp number, etc). the coupon was then automatically assigned to my mvp card and when i checked out with hershey bar in hand, the coupon automatically deducted from my total. so easy! and chocolate-y!!

BOGO (buy one get one) offers at food lion are a great way to stock up. these items actually ring up at half price each, rather than one ringing up full price and one ringing up at zero. this way, you can use two manufacturer's coupons (one for each item). stack with a FLIP and go crazy!

food lion does not have a corporate coupon policy, so unfortunately, if you run into trouble you will have to be strong and stand your ground!! most of the time getting a manager involved helps and they can usually resolve the situation. i have been known to return everything in my cart before for food lion not honoring valid coupons.

finally, if an item that is on sale is out, and you know you want to be able to score this price in the future, ask for a raincheck (or several). rainchecks at food lion do not expire!! be sure you keep your raincheck in a safe place and wait for a coupon to come around!
